A FortiToken is a code generator that generates a unique code for authentication. When this feature is enabled, the user must enter this code in addition to the username and password. The FortiGate appliance then verifies the FortiToken code in combination with username and password. This form of authentication can be used, for example, to set up a VPN connection, for administration access or to use a WLAN portal. Other options for this type of authentication include sending an e-mail or an SMS to the user logging in. In this case, the codes contained therein must be entered in addition to the login.

How does FortiToken work?

Multi-factor authentication is when an additional, dynamically generated code is required in addition to the classic access data (username plus password). You are certainly familiar with this from your online banking account. Whenever you initiate a bank transfer or set up a standing order there, you not only have to log in to your account beforehand. As soon as you initiate these account activities, a TAN is usually sent to you (often to your mobile phone). A six- or eight-digit number, for example, which you must enter in the user interface of your online banking account after receiving it so that the desired action can be carried out.

It should be immediately obvious why such multi-factor authentication makes sense. It makes it far more difficult for cybercriminals to impersonate someone they are not in appropriately sensitive areas. Spying on passwords is not enough!

FortiToken is a password generator that creates precisely these dynamic passwords for a specific task and forwards them to a requesting recipient - for example, an employee who is entrusted with administrative tasks. In addition to his or her regular access data, the recipient must then enter the transmitted code, which is displayed to him or her on the FortiToken device.
