Unauthorised internet surfing and use of web-based applications often results in lost productivity, high network load, malware infection and data loss. Web filtering controls access to web-based applications such as instant messaging, peer-to-peer file sharing and streaming applications. At the same time, phishing sites and blended threats are blocked. Botnet commands and fast flux file downloads can also be blocked. Flow-based web filtering options are also available.

  • How it works: The Fortinet WebFilter module consists of three interacting components: the URL Filter, the Web Content Filter and the FortiGuard Web Filter Service. The URL Filter uses URLs and URL patterns to block web pages. The Web Content Filter blocks web pages that contain certain words or patterns that can be individually specified. Fortinet's FortiGuard Web Filtering Service regulates and provides valuable visibility into all Internet activity, enabling customers to comply with new legal or internal rules and regulations.
  • Protection of minors: Fortinet is a member of the Internet Watch Foundation in the UK, an organisation that fights potentially illegal online content and prevents access to child pornography websites. Fortinet's web filtering solutions are also CIPA certified. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a US federal law passed by the US Congress in December 2000 to address problems regarding access to the Internet and other information in schools and libraries.
